cha cha school progress

Thank you for your generous donations to the Cha Cha Haiti School
Building Campaign. Your gift supports the mission of our sister parish, Notre Dame Du Lourdes, Belle Fontaine Haiti, to educate the children in its 24 parish chapel schools. So far we have raised $160,000. With your gifts, more than 300 children from three villages will have a safe and secure school in which to learn.

Sadly our project has been on hold since November 2021 for two reasons. The first was the impact of covid and the inability to gather a crew or supplies to continue the work.
Second is the continuing escalation of gang activity and the safety risks of sending workers and materials to the construction site.

Construction of the Cha Cha school began in the spring of 2020, adjacent to the chapel. The first step was site preparation and bringing in equipment and tools.
Next, crews laid the stone foundation, installed metal rebar and poured
the concrete floor
to support the third phase of building the concrete walls. Progress was slowed somewhat by the COVID-19 pandemic and heavy flooding from a record number of storms, which damaged the dirt and rock roads and took months to repair. However, work resumed in October.
We are happy to report that today the walls are up, and a workforce of 15 to 20 has made great progress. The school is expected to be completed for the start of school in August of 2021.
In addition to supporting the educational needs of future students, the
project also provided construction apprenticeships to half a dozen
local people
to improve their skills and job opportunities.

The walls of the school begin to go up December 2020
