Cha Cha school building campaign

Our mission in Haiti is to Serve Others by supporting education.

The priest and administrator of this large parish, Father Jean Eddy
Louis, has asked for our help in raising funds to build a new school
in the village of ChaCha.
It is designed to support 300 students, Kindergarten to sixth grade.
This will also serve students in two nearby villages, Grand Chemin and Bois Dunes. In support of the local economy, local skilled labor will build the cinder block and reinforced concrete roofed school. Building materials must be trucked in from the Port Au Prince area.

Future Cha Cha school for 300 children

We have raised $120,000 so far which paid for the foundation and wall construction and it is ready for a roof. The engineers have informed Father Eddy that an additional $30,000 is needed to finish the construction project.
Your donation would help put the roof on this school and provide a safe and secure place for the education of 300 children.

Dear Benefactors
I am obliged once again to ask you for your participation in the construction of the ChaCha school. The construction has arrived in a phase of no return. After several months spent where we are working hard for the realization of this building however, we cannot get to the end because of the lack of funding.
That is why, on behalf of all the children and all the teachers who attend this establishment, I ask you to help us finish with this construction. Your participation will help a lot so that our multiple children do not become delinquents, gangsters because we already have too many who come from the area. We would like to give ChaCha’s children a good education so that they can become citizens able to help their country.
To finish the construction, we need a very significant good participation of $30,000US for:
• Formwork
• Concrete
• Electricity
• Plastering
• Stucco
• Paint
• Bench
• Doors
To achieve this, we need to purchase:
• Cement
• Iron
• Sand
• Gravel
• Labor
That is why, I come back to you to help us finish this school as soon as possible so that the children can enter it at the beginning of August. Already I say thank you for your generosity towards the children of Haiti and more particularly ChaCha.
Merci,
Père Eddy

Run for pie 5k

We run to support education for the children from the Belle Fontaine region in Haiti.  100% of the proceeds from the run will go towards assisting over 4,000 students in the Notre Dame de Lourdes school system with supplies, books for education, teacher salaries, and continued education for the teachers.  Our assistance allows them the opportunity to become empowered and take ownership of their future.  We work to help Haitians fix problems in their country themselves, concentrating on the systems already operating there, rather than simply patching the symptoms of an impoverished education program. Join us in supporting this effort to serve the children and teachers in our sister parish Notre Dame de Lourdes.

Lenten Alms Beginning Thoughts

Walking on a mountain trail in Haiti can be tricky. The winding paths are often made of loose gravel and the stones beneath your feet can shift. A small stone or two might bounce down the mountainside, perhaps dislodging some others that, in turn, upset a few more until what began as a trickle of pebbles becomes a small avalanche.

The financial support we give our sister parish in Haiti is like that. Small actions create larger chain reactions.

When we send a dollar to help pay the salary of a village schoolteacher, we’re helping him or her buy food and shelter. We’re telling those teachers their work is important. It has value and we appreciate it.

But the story doesn’t stop there. When that teacher pays rent, the landlord gets a dollar to spend on lumber he buys from a farmer. The farmer uses the money to have his shoes repaired by a cobbler. The shoemaker pays a merchant for grain to feed his chickens. On and on until the single dollar paid to the schoolteacher has helped create an avalanche of market transactions, helping buoy up many individual villagers and, therefore, the community as a whole.

When the school uses another dollar to purchase supplies such as notebooks, pencils and text books, or hygiene and antiseptic necessities such as soap, or classroom desks, tables and chairs, that dollar starts another avalanche of market transactions.

Take those dollars and multiply them a hundredfold and you may begin to realize the impact your financial contributions have on our brothers and sisters in Belle Fontaine: In a community burdened with poverty, it makes the difference between hope and despair.

The financial support we provide our sister parish educational system directly fosters the following possibilities:

1.teacher salaries;
2. school uniforms;
3. classroom supplies and basic equipment;
4. student health and personal hygiene instruction;
5. gardening cooperatives to train students new farming techniques; and
6. environment of community and individual opportunity that reduces crime and delinquency, initiates village projects, and improves overall well-being.

During this Lenten season, look for more information in the weekly bulletin about each of these impacts.

Beginning Ash Wednesday, you will find envelopes in the pews to contribute your Lenten alms. Please take one home and return it with your donation on or before Holy Thursday Mass April 9th. Any amount would be welcome and useful. A goal donation is $150.

We raise half of our annual budget for education support in Haiti during Lent. Keep our family in Haiti in your hearts this Lent, take an Alms envelope home, and give generously. Renmen Bondye, Sèvi Lòt Moun, Fòm Disip (Love God, Serve Others, Form Disciples).
